The Golden Wolf Awards were created in 1997 by Foxfur and Midknyte. They were originally for Elfquest fan holts on AOL's message boards. They have since grown to include any holt on of off the web, message boards, chatrooms, and fanzines. In 2002 the awards joined with For Elf Eyes Only, an Elfquest fan site, and run by Vicki Stephenson, who is known in Elfquest circles as Peacepine.  In 2007, Vicki passed the awards on to Trena Driessen, more commonly known as Rini who continues the tradition.

In 2003, The Golden Wolf Awards were successfully changed from a public voting system to a nomination process with a judging panel. Detailed instructions are included at the top of the Nomination Form.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How do I get involved in The Golden Wolf Awards?

Easy! Just nominate your favorite characters, people and groups. Plus, you may add a GWA banner to your group website and encourage others to send their nominations!

Q. Who can participate?

Any and all Elfquest groups can participate in The Golden Wolf Awards, whether they are online or offline. Anyone can submit nominations. See the next question for the definition of a group.

Q. What is a group?

For the purposes of The Golden Wolf Awards, a group is defined as a community  that has a leader and at least two other players who roleplay characters in some way. Roleplaying can be done through writing stories, drawing pictures, or acting out characters through chat, email, newsletter, postal mail or in person. A group does not have to be online or have a website. For the Golden Wolf Awards purposes, a group must be Elfquest-related to participate..

Q. What happened to Foxfur, who used to run the awards?

In August 2002 Foxfur decided she could no longer run the awards due to lack of time. She contacted Peacepine and asked if she would like to continue running them as part of her Elfquest fan site, For Elf Eyes Only. She enthusiastically accepted.

Q. What happened to Peacepine then?

At the end of the 2006 Golden Wolf Awards Vicki (a.k.a. Peacepine) decided that she would be unable to continue running the Golden Wolf Awards due to time constraints.  She wanted the awards to continue, however, and contacted Rini who had run the RPGA's (no longer available) as well as both Elfquest and Non-Elfquest groups and asked her to run these awards.  She enthusiastically accepted.

Q. How do I know when the voting starts? How do I know when the winners have been announced?

The GWA homepage will always include this information and you can join the GWA Newsletter. Rini will also do her best to advertise in individual groups, the Scroll of Colors message boards and Vicki has agreed to continue to advertise on the Elfeyes Only message boards.

Q. What happened to [fill in the blank] category?

The categories are always being refined based on suggestions received, though the same general categories are often used. Sometimes special categories appear that are related to the current theme and they will not be used again.

Q. Why can the same person, character or group continue to win in the same category year after year?

The Golden Wolf Awards believes that when a category is won by a person, character or group it is because it was well-deserved. It also sets the bar for that category. If the nominations and judging decides that the same person, character or group is still the most deserving the following year, then the GWAs honor that choice. Therefore, The Golden Wolf Awards does not have a "term of office" policy.

Q. How do you come up with the themes?

For the most part, they are chosen from the suggestions sent in from the GWA Report Card (found in the 'extras' section after winners are announced.)  Often the person who has suggested a theme will be asked to help come up with some of the categories.  Suggestions for themes are always welcome!

Q. How do I become a judge?

When filling out the GWA report card, please check the box that says 'I would like to be a judge'.  Rini will search for judges based on that, and on people that she knows can be impartial during the judging process about a month before everything starts up.!

Q. I've heard of The Golden Wolf Holt. Are you associated with them somehow?

The Golden Wolf Holt is completely different from The Golden Wolf Awards and we are not associated in any way. "Golden Wolf" is also used in some company names. It is just coincidental.
